Where in the World IS Cumberland?
Cumberland, MD, is about 185 miles WNW of Washington, DC. The old Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, built between 1828 and 1850, once connected the two points. Much of the canal has been drained, but there is still an earth-and-gravel towpath that runs its length. It is a popular route for recreational bicyclists. Thanks largely to the visionary work of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, the canal and towpath became a National Historic Park in 1971.
